The generation game

For many reasons multi-generational living is becoming increasing popular in the UK with more British households now housing three or more generations living together under one roof. It’s a trend which has seen an estimated 30% increase in the past decade and continues to rise. According to the Office for National Statistics, 3.3m or 25% of 20-34 year olds lived in their parental home in 2016. At the other end of the scale, grandparents often want to downsize at a time when their children need more space but can’t afford it, so multi-generational living makes a great deal of sense.

Teenager or granny annexes have become increasingly popular and specially built homes with large living spaces, multiple bathrooms and two front doors may well become commonplace for new build properties, according to the National House Building Council.

It’s not a decision to be taken lightly, but there can be significant benefits for all involved. While the younger generations may save money on household costs and get childcare help, the older generations can benefit hugely from an emotional and practical point of view with company, help with household tasks and care as they become less able. The elderly can continue to live independently, with the safety net of having relatives under the same roof if needed.

Before looking for a suitable property, there are many factors to consider when sharing a house with your parents and children. You need to accommodate everyone’s needs and how these may change in the years ahead. Most families considering multigenerational living will need to move house to accommodate three generations, although some will be able to extend their existing property. Often families look for properties with multiple units, such as a house with a converted barn, offering a self-contained independent option for the grandparents. Whatever the solution, it needs to factor in mobility requirements, space and privacy for all involved.
