Area Guide to Ashford and surrounding villages
Ashford is situated towards the south-western peripheries of Greater London, between the areas of Sunbury, Feltham and Staines.
It was not until the 1900s, that Ashford began to develop and grow from a village location, this was largely a result of its location between the major routes. Upon the construction of the station and the increasing network of lines, Ashford began to grow from a village into a commuter town, with much of the initial growth being centred around the station.
Highway improvements within Church Road to include multi storey free car parking, pedestrian crossings and speed restriction schemes have created a more desirable town centre. There are an array of local shops and schooling facilities within the Ashford area, in addition a further range of the same can be found within its nearby neighbouring conurbations.
In terms of communication links, Ashford is ideally situated for road and rail links, the M3 and M25 motorways are located within close proximity and there is a railway station within the town. Subsequently, central London can be accessed via the railway network and the Surrey and Berkshire countryside via the motorway and local road network.
Although Ashford does not demonstrate a varied historical background, it comprises in instances old established properties. For example, The Royal Hart was constructed in the 1850s and is the oldest surviving building and Spelthorne College dates back to 1911.
There are leisure facilities within the general vicinity as a whole, Ashford Manor Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 1998 and Queen Mary reservoir was opened in 1925.
