Area Guide to Beaconsfield and surrounding villages

Situated within southern Buckinghamshire, Beaconsfield is set on the A40 road between the conurbations of High Wycombe and Gerrards Cross, the surrounding area comprises miles of Chiltern countryside and numerous woodlands such as Penn Wood, Common Wood and Burnham Beeches.

Beaconsfield is thought to be of Saxon origin, from about 900AD, a church of wooden construction was previously situated upon the site of the present Parish Church.

During the 18th century, an era of prosperity was brought to the town with the increasing growth of the coaching trade, as Beaconsfield became an important stopping point for travellers between London and Oxford. This wealth and affluence continued throughout the 18th century and during which many grand and some of its finest properties were constructed.

By the mid 19th century the declining agricultural and coaching industries seriously affected the prosperity of the town. The decline in the coaching industry was brought about by the development of the railways, however, the high ground that Beaconsfield was situated upon proved too costly to construct a railway and as such the line did not arrive until 1906.

Situated approximately one mile to the north of the original town of Beaconsfield, the railway station swiftly became the heart of the New Town development. The new town of Beaconsfield has been developed either side of the B474 and comprises more modern shopping, commercial and residential areas.

The Old Town area of Beaconsfield was developed around the coaching era during the 18th century and as such lies either side of the A40 and is famously known for its attractive tree-lined main street. The historic centre comprises numerous georgian properties coupled with public houses, specialist shops, restaurants and offices. In order to preserve the character of Beaconsfield’s Old Town, the area has now become a conservation area and is strictly controlled by the Hall Barn Estate development.

Farnham Common represents a premium commuter village location on the outskirts of London towards the northern side of the town conurbation of Slough. This semi-rural village location and area as a whole house an older core of property stock coupled with gradual development throughout the years. To include a fairly high proportion of 1930s stock, small pocket infills of 1960s and 1970s properties coupled with more modern executive housing.

In terms of amenities/facilities, Beaconsfield Civic centre offers a variety of high street chainstores, local independent shops, exclusive boutiques and a couple of supermarkets, in addition to a range of restaurants, cafes and public houses.

Within the immediate area of Farnham Common, amenities/facilities range from a small supermarket to a golf store, with subsequently a number of public houses and restaurants.

With regard to schooling, there are both junior/primary and secondary schooling available within Beaconsfield, these are reportedly amongst the best within the country and primary and middle schooling can be found within the Farnham Common area.

The communication links for area are via the nearby M4, M40 and M25 motorways and there are railway stations within Beaconsfield itself and 4 railway stations within 4 to 5 miles of Farnham Common, approximately 10 minutes in travel time.
