Safe as houses?

As autumn fades and the clocks go back, the nights draw in. October is officially National Home Security Month (NHSM) and with a 20% increase in burglaries in darker months, it’s time to consider home security. Whether you are thinking of selling or staying put this winter, here are some tips from The Frost Partnership to keep you and your property “as safe as houses” and give your home added appeal in the process.

The NHSM initiative urges us to consider home security. A burglary happens approximately every 40 seconds in the UK. You expect to feel safe at home; it’s where you keep valuable possessions and irreplaceable sentimental items so it’s worth checking how secure your home is. This doesn’t need to be expensive; reinforcing doors with simple accessories and adding quality locks makes a huge difference.

Fit window locks to all ground floor windows and accessible ones upstairs. Motion-sensitive lighting above doors, garages and side gates is a good idea and use timers on indoor lights if you arrive home after dark. Lighting is vital for security and new fittings can be aesthetically pleasing too. Keep sheds containing bikes, mowers and tools securely locked and above all take out good home and contents insurance. Winter weather plays havoc with fences, roofing, pipes and brickwork so repair any problems before more work is needed.
