Dreaming of summer

After a few glorious days of sunshine, summer’s on its way and you can really start to dream about lazy days outdoors. So think about what you can do to transform your garden into a real haven for relaxing or entertaining. And, if you've let your garden go over the winter, now's the time to get it in shape for summer.

It’s all about inspiration and a transformation is almost instantly possible even if you’re thinking of moving. With careful thought, if you’re getting your property ready to sell or are renting a property it doesn’t need to be expensive or permanent. Here’s some inspiration to suit every budget and ideas you can tailor to meet your needs.

If you’re starting small, choose an area to transform and create a designated space for entertaining – whether it’s a deck, patio or roof terrace – make the most of the space with some careful thought and planning. Then reinvent your space with furniture for dining outdoors. New barbecue tables containing custom designed gas fired barbecues look set to revolutionise the way friends and family cook and eat whilst sitting together.

If you have the budget and space and love eating outdoors, an outdoor kitchen can add the “Wow” factor. Make sure that any appliances are suitable for outdoor conditions and are adequately protected. Enclosing your space will add privacy and make it feel like an extra room, smoothing the transition between house and garden. Add a pergola covered with climbing plants or lattice panels and large potted plants and add shade with parasols or awnings. Use of fragrant plants and scented foliage like jasmine, lavender and honeysuckle will make your oasis even more relaxing. For real outdoor comfort requiring little space or expense, install a hammock or swing seat where you can relax.

To enjoy your garden once the sun goes down, invest in good lighting not only for your outdoor “room” but for paths and steps too. With a mix of lighting like outdoor lanterns, low voltage lighting and solar lights you can make your garden a truly magical place after dark. Add a fountain, fireplace, or fire pit to enhance the beauty and functionality of your outdoor room and don’t forget some throws and cushions for comfort.

A garden room can be a practical way to create new living space and make better use of your garden. If it’s done well, it can add value so choose one that’s in keeping with your home and garden. Buy a professionally designed building from a specialist supplier and hire a builder to install it for best results. If you have a limited budget or want something less permanent, have some fun converting an existing garden shed into a creative, functional space for relaxing. With a coat of paint, fun lighting and some well-chosen accessories you can create a relaxing place to unwind with friends. The internet is full of inspiration so let your imagination run wild.

For the ultimate in relaxation, a hot tub or spa is a real luxury but consider your privacy, access to the house, and whether you want the tub in sunshine or shade. Bear in mind that when full of water it may weigh as much as 2 tons, so will need extra strong foundations! However you decide to transform your garden, it’s important to choose something that you and your family will enjoy. Whilst garden improvements may add the all-important “Wow” factor and make your property appealing to a wider audience of buyers or tenants, they may not actually add to the value of your home, so it’s worth checking before you invest significant money.
