Get your garden ready for spring.

It may not feel like it, after such a wet February, but spring IS on its way and as the evenings get lighter, you can plan ahead for lazy days and sunshine. Outside space is hugely important, not just when you value your property but for everyday living, and now’s a great time to get your garden ready for Spring. However large or small, you can rapidly transform your outside space. And, whether you are thinking of selling your property or are renting a property, it can be relatively inexpensive and portable. Here are some inspirational tips for every budget.

Use the next few weeks for clearing winter debris, planting and pruning so that when warmer weather arrives, you can just sit back and enjoy your garden. The Royal Horticultural Society  has great advice for jobs to do each month and the top 10 for March include pruning bushes and climbing roses, planting summer-flowering bulbs, controlling weeds and mowing the lawn if it is dry. If you are not green fingered, there’s excellent advice on minimum maintenance and maximum enjoyment with fragrance and colour.

Choose one area to transform and create an outdoor entertaining space. Start with a clean and tidy up, then reinvent your area with furniture for alfresco dining. Replace old garden furniture or just refresh existing wooden furniture with a coat of outdoor paint. Enclosing your outdoor space with lattice panels and large potted plants will give you privacy and make it feel like an extra room. The whole family can have some fun converting an existing shed or summer house into a fun space to relax or play. A lick of paint, lighting and some well-chosen accessories will completely transform a shed into a den for the kids or somewhere you can unwind with friends.

It pays to invest in good lighting for the evening. Make your garden a magical place at dusk by mixing outdoor lanterns, low voltage and solar lights. If you have the space and the budget, add a fire pit for extra WOW factor and don’t forget some soft blankets and cushions for comfort on chilly evenings. Whatever you do to transform your outdoor space, make sure it’s something that you and your family will enjoy.

Whilst garden transformations can make your property appealing to more buyers or tenants, it may not actually add anything to the value of your home, so it’s worth checking before you invest significant money in any permanent items.
