Here comes Summer!

It’s official – Summer is here and with the mercury rising you can really start to enjoy lazy days and sunshine, at least some of the time! Many transformed their outdoor space during lockdown and now’s the time to spruce it up!

Instant changes are possible with a little inspiration even if you’re thinking of moving. If you’re getting your property ready to sell or are renting a property you can make changes that are inexpensive or that you can take with you when you move. Here’s some inspiration for all budgets and ideas you can tailor to meet your needs.

Start with one area and make a designated space for entertaining. Whether it’s a deck or a roof terrace, maximise use of the space with some careful planning. Reinvent your space with new furniture for dining outdoors. Add a touch of luxury to your al fresco dining with a table and integrated gas fire pit system which allows you to enjoy your garden long into the evening.

An outdoor kitchen can really add the “Wow” factor if you have the budget and space and love eating outdoors. Make sure that appliances are suitable for outdoor conditions and are adequately protected. Enclosing your space adds privacy and makes it feel like an extra room with a smooth transition between house and garden. Add a pergola covered with climbing plants or lattice panels and large potted plants and add shade with parasols or awnings. Use of scented plants like jasmine, lavender and honeysuckle will make your oasis even more relaxing. For extra comfort requiring little space or expense, install a hammock or swing seat where you can relax.

To enjoy your garden after dark, buy some good lighting for your outdoor “room” and for paths and steps. A mix of outdoor lanterns, low voltage lighting and solar lights can make your garden a truly magical place. Add a fountain, fireplace, or fire pit to enhance the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space and don’t forget some throws and cushions.

A garden room can be a practical way to create new living space and make better use of your garden. If it’s done well, it can add value so choose one that’s in keeping with your home and garden. Buy a professionally designed building from a specialist supplier and hire a builder to install it for best results. On a limited budget or for something less permanent, have fun converting a garden shed. With a lick of paint, fairy lights and some well-chosen accessories you can create a relaxing place to unwind with friends. The internet is full of inspiration so let your imagination run wild.

For the ultimate in relaxation, a hot tub or spa is a real luxury but consider your privacy, access to the house, and whether you want the tub in sunshine or shade. Bear in mind that when full it may weigh as much as 2 tons, so will need strong foundations! Pandemic restrictions have widened the market for home entertainment so you could always try before you buy by hiring one for a weekend and perhaps a garden cinema set-up too.

However you decide to transform your garden, choose something that you and your family will enjoy. Whilst garden improvements may add the “wow” factor and make your property appealing to a wider audience of buyers or tenants, they may not actually add to the value of your home, so it’s worth checking before you invest significant money.
