Moving with Pets?
Friday, August 15, 2025
Moving house with pets can be a stressful experience—for both you and your animals. Pets are creatures of habit, and sudden changes in environment can lead to anxiety and confusion. To make the transition smoother, it’s important to plan ahead and consider your pet’s needs at every stage of the move.
Before moving day, try to maintain your pet’s normal routine as much as possible. Feeding times, walks, and play sessions should remain consistent to provide a sense of stability. If your pet is prone to stress, speak to your vet about possible calming strategies, such as pheromone sprays, supplements, or mild sedatives.
During the packing process, keep your pet in a quiet, familiar room with their bedding, toys, food, and water. This helps them feel safe while the rest of the house is being boxed up. On moving day, consider arranging for a friend, family member, or pet sitter to care for your animal, so they’re not overwhelmed by the chaos.
When transporting your pet to the new home, secure them properly—whether in a crate, carrier, or with a pet seatbelt. Keep them calm with familiar items, such as a favourite blanket or toy. Once at the new location, set up a quiet room with their belongings where they can slowly get settled before exploring the rest of the home.
After the move, re-establish routines quickly. Give your pet extra attention and reassurance as they adjust. Monitor for signs of stress like changes in appetite, excessive hiding, or unusual aggression, and contact a vet if needed. Moving with pets requires patience and preparation, but with the right approach, your furry friend will soon feel at home in their new surroundings. The key is to make the process feel as familiar, safe, and calm as possible.
