New Home, New Look for 2023

You may be thinking about moving house and what changes you could make when you move in or perhaps just feel like a fresh new look for your current home. So how do you go about making your mark and ringing the changes? If you need some expert inspiration, it might be worth a visit to The Ideal Home show at Olympia, London from 17th March – 2nd April 2023 where exhibitors will be showcasing all the latest high-tech products and on-trend solutions for your home. The 2023 Future Living Home at the show will showcase how living spaces have evolved, with interior inspiration on new ideas for colours and decorating styles. Energy efficiency, use of natural lighting and renewable energy are all likely to feature strongly given the recent energy price increases. Ahead of the show, here are some pointers for what’s trending in décor this year.

Dulux Colour of the Year for 2023 is Wild Wonder™ a “glowing natural tone that offers us a connection with nature and that brings a sense of natural magic into our homes.” After years of whites and greys dominating design, we will see more soothing palettes that are warm and cosy. B&Q say, “Our love of nature and natural elements within our homes is set to stay, as rich colours take over, to reflect this natural, botanical palette. For those wanting to bring the outdoors in, in 2023, stick to jewel tones of blue and green for paint, as well as plenty of foliage and rich textures in décor.” Or choose wallpaper which replicates greenery and green accessories such as cushions or blankets.

Lighting is key to the look of any room and can make all the difference without hiking energy bills. LED bulbs have changed lighting for good with low energy consumption and longevity. Make the most of natural light with lightweight or semi-transparent curtains that allow light to filter in. A popular lighting trend that will continue throughout 2023 is the use of downlights to highlight features or spaces such as dining tables. Smart lighting that can be controlled via wifi is already a big thing, allowing complete control over the atmosphere and energy consumption in your home. You can also find fixtures made from sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled glass. These earth-friendly choices help reduce your carbon footprint and make your home “greener”.

Use of sustainable and natural products remains high on the agenda for interiors. Many materials are considered environmentally friendly, such as aluminium, rattan and bamboo. Cork, for example, is likely to become more popular in 2023 for its natural brown colour, earthy texture, warmth and cosiness.

There’s also growing interest in local crafts and design that is bespoke and hand-made and this will be reflected in accessories and sturdy homeware sculpted for longevity. Increasingly we are upcycling or looking for vintage furniture, rather than buying brand new. If you are trying to shop more sustainably, consider buying furniture made from sustainably sourced, local or recycled materials and reduce waste by buying/selling second hand furniture on sites like Gumtree and Freecycle.

Whatever trends inspire your interiors in 2023, have fun, add your own style, then relax and enjoy the results.
